German Producer Prices Rise More Than Expected in September

German producer prices rose more strongly than expected in September, with the Producer Price Index (PPI) increasing 6.7% year-on-year, up from 4.6% in August and exceeding market expectations for a 6.3% rise. On a monthly basis, producer prices advanced 1.9%, accelerating from August’s 1.1% increase and surpassing the 1.5% consensus forecast.

The annual increase marked the fastest pace of producer price growth since March 2023, highlighting mounting inflationary pressures across the economy. The surge was driven primarily by higher energy costs, with energy prices rising by more than 14% during 2026.

As producer prices are a key leading indicator for consumer inflation, the stronger-than-expected September reading suggests that price pressures remain elevated. Rising fuel costs continue to feed through the economy, increasing production and transportation expenses across a wide range of sectors.

The latest data have reinforced concerns among economists about the inflation outlook, with some warning that producer inflation could approach double-digit levels if current conditions persist. The report follows recent data showing Germany’s Consumer Price Index accelerating to 3.3% in September from 2.9% in August, reaching its highest level since December 2023 and adding to concerns about persistent inflationary pressures.
